Advantages of using translation memory

  1. Consistency: Consistency across all your documentation is ensured by reusing previous translations.
  2. Efficiency: TMs make it possible to translate new texts more quickly by using previously translated sentences.
  3. Cost-effectiveness:: By using existing translations, you reduce the need to pay for repeated translations.

Applications

Translation memories are particularly useful for organisations with a lot of repeated texts, such as technical manuals and product descriptions. By using a TM, you can quickly update your existing documentation without having to translate the whole text from scratch.

Criteria for effective TMs

To get the best results from a translation memory, the quality and consistency of your texts are of the utmost importance. For accurate translations, source texts should be clearly structured and free from ambiguities. Additionally, your texts need to be in an editable format which can be handled by a CAT tool.

World Translation’s approach to translation memory

At World Translation we believe that your translation memory should be your property. We ensure that all your translations are saved in a TM, which you can have access to. This allows you to get the most out of your translations – both now and in the future.

How does translation memory work

When your text needs to be translated, a Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tool will divide the text into smaller segments, which are then compared to the contents of the TM. If a segment has been translated before, the previous translation appears as a suggestion to the translator, which in turn increases the speed with which they can move through your text.

Your language expert explains

“Translation memories are indispensable resources for translation work today. At World Translation, our TM systems help to ensure consistency and quality in all translations.

By using previously translated segments, we can reduce time and costs, whilst simultaneously improving accuracy and consistency in, for example, technical documents and manuals. A TM also helps to optimise the work of the native speaker, as they won’t need to start from scratch every time. This ensures a higher degree of precision and consistency in the translations, which is of course extremely important to our customers.”
